A new report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics has revealed that many Kenyans still view domestic violence as acceptable under certain circumstances.
The data shows that harmful gender norms remain deeply rooted, with 33.5% of women and 22.5% of men aged 15–49 agreeing that a husband is justified in beating his wife if she is unfaithful.

Other reasons cited include neglecting children (23.5% of women, 18.1% of men), refusing to cook (19.3% of women, 11.2% of men), and even burning food.
Alarmingly, 42.6% of women and 34.7% of men believe wife-beating is justified for at least one of these reasons.
The findings highlight the troubling normalization of gender-based violence and the power imbalances that often silence women.

The survey calls for urgent interventions, including awareness programs, stronger legal protections, and cultural change to eliminate the dangerous belief that violence can ever be an acceptable way to resolve marital issues.
