Kenya’s Harambee Stars sealed top spot in Group A with a narrow 1-0 win over Zambia at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday, August 17.
The victory, courtesy of a 75th-minute strike by Tusker forward Ryan Ogam, ensured Kenya finished the group stage with 10 points, one ahead of Morocco. The result sets up a quarter-final clash against Madagascar on Friday, August 22.

The match was played at high intensity from the outset. Kenya pressed for an early advantage, with Ben Stanley, Austin Odhiambo, and Ogam creating chances, while Zambia—already eliminated—sought to salvage pride. A goal-line clearance from Michael Kibwage and several key saves by goalkeeper Farouk Shikalo kept Kenya in the game.
The breakthrough came late in the second half when Muchiri’s incisive run split the Zambian defence before he set up Ogam, who calmly slotted past goalkeeper Kalumba to seal the win. Zambia pushed hard for an equalizer, but Kenya’s defence held firm to secure the result.

Ahead of the clash, President William Ruto had pledged hefty incentives for the team, promising Ksh2.5 million to each player if they beat Zambia. He further assured them of Ksh1 million and a two-bedroom affordable housing unit should they advance past the quarter-finals.
Speaking after meeting the team on August 10 following their victory over Morocco, Ruto praised the Stars for uniting the nation and urged Kenyans to continue supporting them.
“Sports has the power to unite us. The Harambee Stars have shown what unity can achieve, and this tournament presents a real chance for us to win CHAN,” he said, expressing confidence in their continued success.
