Court Resumes Inquest Into Jeff Mwathi’s Death

The inquest into the death of interior designer Jeff Mwathi, born Geoffrey Mwathi Ngugi, resumes today at the Nairobi magistrates’ court.

Mwathi died on February 22, 2023, after reportedly falling from the 10th floor of Redwood Apartments in Roysambu, Nairobi. Initial reports suggested suicide following a night out with Mugithi singer DJ Fatxo (real name Lawrence Njuguna Wagura).

The two had met the previous day for a potential interior design job at Fatxo’s business along the Eastern Bypass, later going out for food and drinks at different clubs before returning to the DJ’s house around 3 am.

However, Mwathi’s father, Peter Ngugi, who has already testified, dismissed claims of suicide, insisting his son was murdered. He told the court that Fatxo was with three women that night and had called his driver, Geoffrey Wanyeki, and cousin, Christopher Wang’ombe, to join them despite claiming he was too drunk to drive.

Last week, popular Mugithi singer Samidoh (Samuel Muchoki) also testified, faulting police for failing to secure the crime scene. He estimated Mwathi’s death occurred between 5 am and 6 am, noting that officers from Kasarani Police Station only arrived about an hour later.

Samidoh added that CCTV footage showed Mwathi’s body falling, and that the DJ was later seen leaving the apartment with three women but without Mwathi. He further expressed dissatisfaction with the initial postmortem results, saying he only viewed the body during the second autopsy, by which time it had already been dressed.

The singer said he sought a second opinion from the DCI headquarters in Kasarani, a move he claimed was supported by fellow artists.
