Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been granted bail on a Sh53 million bond while he awaits the hearing of his appeal.
Waititu had been serving a prison sentence after being convicted of corruption charges involving Sh588 million in February.
However, the High Court, under Judge Lucy Njuguna, reversed an earlier decision, granting him bond after previously denying two prior bond requests.
The former governor had filed an appeal against his conviction, but his initial request for bail was denied, with assurances that his case would be heard promptly. In a subsequent application, Waititu sought to amend his appeal, introducing new evidence and additional grounds in support of his case. The court approved this amendment, providing him with a fresh chance to argue for his release.
Waititu was sentenced to 12 years in prison or a fine of Sh52.5 million after being found guilty of conflict of interest in a corruption case involving the Sh588 million road construction tenders in Kiambu. He was also barred from holding any political office for the next seven years.
His wife, Susan Ndung’u, received a one-year prison sentence or a fine of Sh500,000 for her involvement in the case. Both were acquitted on three counts of money laundering.
Additionally, their co-accused, Testimony Enterprises Limited director Charles Chege, was handed a nine-year jail term or a fine of Sh295 million, while the company’s second director, Beth Wangeci, was fined Sh1 million or given a one-year prison sentence.
The charges stemmed from fraudulent procurement tenders linked to road projects in Kiambu County.
