The incident occurred on July 6, 2025, during a press briefing organized by a group of Kenyan mothers advocating for an end to arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings, particularly in connection to recent protests.
The event descended into chaos when armed intruders stormed the KHRC offices and disrupted the gathering.
“We have released CCTV footage — anyone with information that can help identify these individuals is urged to come forward,” KHRC said in a statement.
According to KHRC, the attackers caused panic among attendees, including journalists, with reports of stolen personal items and electronic equipment from the premises.
The press conference was being held at KHRC’s offices on Gitanga Road when the intruders forced their way in, demanding the meeting be stopped. Fearing for their safety, those present fled as the situation turned chaotic, with some reporting cases of theft.
Police were alerted, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
Separately, KHRC has condemned the deportation of its Senior Programme and Legal Advisor on Transitional Justice, Martin Mavenjina, to Uganda.

The commission revealed that Mavenjina, who had returned to Kenya from an official assignment in South Africa on Saturday night, was deported shortly after arriving in the country.
KHRC has labelled the deportation illegal, arguing that Mavenjina possesses valid documentation authorizing him to work in Kenya.
“The officer in charge of transitional justice holds proper legal documents. His deportation is unjustified and raises serious concerns over harassment of human rights defenders,” KHRC stated.
