Onyonka commended Raila for his long-standing fight for democracy and justice, saying his legacy is secure.
Speaking on May 5, 2025, during a talk show, Onyonka said, “Raila has made an unforgettable impact, but even the best dancer must know when to leave the stage.”
Onyonka expressed disapproval of Raila’s recent collaboration with President William Ruto through the ODM-UDA cooperation deal, saying it disappointed many of his supporters. The senator revealed that his own decision to back former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i was influenced by this political shift.
“I’ve shared a close bond with Raila for over three decades. But my constituents — particularly the youth and my community — believe it’s time for him to step back and safeguard his legacy,” he said.
He warned that Raila might face the same public backlash he experienced after his 2018 truce with then-President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Pressed on why he remains in ODM despite his divergence from Raila, Onyonka rejected calls to resign and seek re-election, arguing it would be a waste of public funds since he is confident in his popular support.
“We’re debating policy, not personalities, within ODM,” he noted.
Onyonka is now a prominent figure in Matiang’i’s presidential campaign, actively helping to build alliances with key opposition players. On May 4, he joined Matiang’i on a visit to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s home in Wamunyoro.
