Chadema Chairman, Tundu Lissu.

Lissu Speaks to Chakwera, Wants Treason Case Against him Dropped

By: BBC

The leader of the Party for Democracy and Development (CHADEMA) Tundu Lissu has met with Lazurus Chakwera, the Commonwealth’s special envoy to Tanzania, to discuss the future of law and governance in the country, the party’s statement said.

During their discussion, Lissu presented different points to the former Malawian president that he would like to see addressed.

These arguments are as follows:

  • The dismissal of the treason case against him, along with the cases against his party
  • An investigation into the events of October 29 through a SADC institution
  • The existence of an enabling environment for genuine dialogue
  • Institutional accountability for what happened in October 2025, particularly for the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties, INEC, TCRA and reference to Judge Nyalali’s 1992 report.
  • Reforms in the defense and security agencies
  • Changes to the entire electoral system, including the creation of a new independent election monitoring body based on various reports from investigative observers
  • Obtaining a new constitution.

It has been a year since Tundu Lissu, Chairman of (CHADEMA), was arrested and imprisoned on charges of treason and sedition.

His case has attracted international attention, sparking debate about constitutional rights, judicial transparency, and political freedom in Tanzania.

This case is one of the biggest political cases in Tanzania since the return to a multi-party system in 1992.
