In a letter addressed to David Mugonyi, CEO of the Communications Authority of Kenya, the BCLB instructed Safaricom to deactivate paybill numbers and STK push services linked to several firms, including Cheza Crash, Skai Crash, Vuma Bet, and Aviator 254.

According to the BCLB, these platforms have been running illegally, sparking public complaints and accusations of exploitation through unregulated betting schemes.

“The Board has received numerous complaints from the public regarding unauthorized betting websites that solicit funds from unsuspecting users under false pretenses,” the BCLB said in its statement.

Investigations revealed that these platforms accept mobile money deposits but fail to issue payouts, effectively defrauding users. In addition, the operations violate established gambling regulations, prompting their immediate suspension.

The government recently also imposed a 30-day ban on all gambling advertisements across media channels, citing growing concerns over rising betting addiction nationwide.

“In line with regulatory enforcement, the Board has ordered the immediate deactivation of these betting websites. Safaricom PLC is therefore directed to suspend all related paybill accounts and STK services,” the directive stated.
