The incident occurred after the pastor, who had gone to visit a female friend in Jwela village, Ramula location, left his car parked along a road leading to River Miriu. Villagers who noticed the vehicle grew suspicious and raised alarm, prompting others to erect three roadblocks with boulders. Some kept watch between 8:30 pm and 9:00 pm, and later regrouped from 10:00 pm to 11:00 pm, waiting for the owner to return.
According to an anonymous eyewitness, the pastor was attacked upon returning to his car, while the woman he was with fled into the night. “He tried to run away but was forced back into the vehicle before managing to escape with some injuries,” the witness said.
The mob later torched the car after the pastor fled.
Ramula location chief Judith Gumbo Ayodo confirmed the two suspects are being held at Senta Sori Police Station as investigations continue. She cautioned residents against taking the law into their own hands, warning that anyone found doing so will face arrest and prosecution.
This comes a month after another vehicle, allegedly used by cattle rustlers, was set on fire in Kakoth village when two suspects were caught loading a stolen cow during the day. One suspect was lynched by the enraged crowd, while the other managed to escape.
Residents have in recent times voiced concerns about rising livestock theft, often carried out in daylight using small vehicles. In the previous incident, police recovered several license plates from the suspects’ car.
