The fresh adjustments, which have stirred public debate, include a new Sh366,000 monthly mileage allowance that significantly boosts MPs’ overall earnings.
Breakdown of MPs’ Monthly Earnings:
- Gross Salary: Sh725,500
- Mileage Allowance (New): Sh366,000
- Car Maintenance Allowance: Sh356,525
- Committee Sitting Allowances:
- Sh120,000 for regular members
- Sh240,000 for committee chairpersons
- Special Duty Allowance (for MPs with leadership roles): Sh150,000
- Airtime Allowance: Sh15,000
In addition to the regular monthly pay, MPs are entitled to a one-time motor vehicle reimbursement of Sh7.5 million to cater for personal transport.
Furthermore, MPs whose constituency offices are located more than 205 kilometers from Nairobi—where Parliament sits—will be eligible to claim an additional Sh152.60 per kilometer for the extra distance, adding to the standard Sh366,000 mileage allowance.
The enhanced pay package has already sparked criticism from some members of the public and civil society, who argue that the timing and magnitude of the allowances are excessive amid pressing national issues such as drought, food insecurity, and rising public debt.
However, proponents of the adjustments argue that the allowances are necessary to cover the logistical demands of MPs, especially those from far-flung constituencies, and to support the effective discharge of their legislative, representative, and oversight duties.
The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) is yet to officially comment on the public reaction to the new structure.
