The incident occurred on Sunday during a picnic outing, according to the girl’s father, Danson Njue.

Since then, residents from Kimbimbi, Mathangauta, Ngucue, Gatitika, and neighboring villages have been camping at the riverbanks, anxiously trying to recover her body.

Benson Gachoki, a local village official, noted that the site regularly attracts over 100 youths from Kirinyaga and nearby counties, especially on Sundays.

“Kirinyaga is famous for its beautiful waterfalls. Many visit Gatitika every weekend to enjoy the scenery. This is, however, the first drowning incident reported at the site,” he said.

Families and villagers are now appealing to the county government and national disaster response teams to help speed up the recovery efforts.
