US Ambassador Meg Whitman is advocating for Nairobi to become the headquarters of the African Grammy Awards, expressing her support for Kenya among the four proposed African countries.
Whitman, a US tech billionaire, highlighted the significance of the Grammys, explaining that after the American Grammys and the Latin-American Grammys, the African Grammys were recently announced. Kenya, along with Nigeria, is one of the founding countries for the African Grammys.
She emphasized a competition among the proposed cities, including Abidjan, Lagos, Nairobi, Johannesburg, and Kigali, to secure the headquarters status. Whitman expressed her preference for Nairobi to become the hub for the African Grammys.
The National Academy of Recording Arts and Science, responsible for the Grammy Awards, designated regional hubs for future shows, aiming to support artists and ensure fair compensation for their creative work. However, there is ongoing competition among African leaders, including Kenyan President William Ruto and Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, to secure the headquarters for their respective countries.
This year marked the introduction of African music categories at the Grammys, reflecting the genre’s growing global popularity, particularly Afrobeats. Platforms like Spotify have seen significant growth in Afrobeats streams, with the genre being recognized as the fastest-growing music category.
