A tragic incident has occurred at Makerere University, where a student, Irene Nabaggala, aged 22, has taken her own life just a fortnight before the highly anticipated graduation ceremony at the renowned Ugandan educational institution.
Local media reports reveal that Nabaggala was on the verge of completing her Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology, Microbiology, and Immunology. The 74th graduation ceremony, scheduled from January 29 to February 2, 2024, was meant to be a momentous occasion for her.
The reports indicate that Nabaggala, who had been struggling with depression for some time, unfortunately succumbed to the mental health condition.
The Makerere University Biotechnology Society expressed their sorrow in a tweet, saying, “It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Irene Nabagala, a cherished member of the Makerere University Biotechnology family. To her friends and family, may you find solace in the memories shared with Irene during this difficult time.”
