UDA to Replace Gachagua with Kindiki as Deputy Party Leader

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has announced plans to remove former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua as its deputy party leader, replacing him with c his successor.

The notice, published in the Star newspaper, cites the Political Parties Act and indicates that the decision will take effect only if ratified by the Registrar of Political Parties.

This move follows Gachagua’s impeachment in October 2023, which stemmed from insubordination to President William Ruto. Gachagua’s impeachment triggered his removal as the party’s deputy leader, with Kindiki appointed deputy president by Ruto shortly after. Gachagua is currently challenging his impeachment in court.

If Gachagua is expelled from UDA, it could lead to a legal battle, though he is reportedly planning to launch his own political party in early February, ahead of the 2027 elections. This new party, which will include blue as one of its colors, aims to consolidate support in his Mount Kenya stronghold.

Meanwhile, UDA has strengthened its position by merging with the Amani National Congress (ANC), incorporating ANC leaders into its ranks.

The merger includes leadership changes, with Issa Timamy becoming the second deputy party leader and Omboko Milemba taking a key role. The UDA is also rebranding in preparation for the 2027 elections.
