Uasin Gishu: More Than 200 Families Forced Out for Affordable Housing Initiative

In Uasin Gishu county, over 200 families residing in Pioneer estate have been displaced from houses owned by the county government to make room for the construction of new cost-effective housing units. Some of these families, who have been tenants in these homes for over three decades, expressed surprise at the abrupt eviction, having been verbally notified that they had until March 2024 to vacate.

Several affected residents, such as Naomi Tangwonyi, emphasized the challenges posed by the sudden eviction, particularly as it coincided with the imminent return of their children to school. Tangwonyi found the situation disheartening and described it as inhumane.

Lucas Obiero, a resident for thirty years, highlighted the lack of information regarding the benefits that affected families would receive from the new affordable housing program once completed.

Moreover, some families accused the county of not fulfilling its commitment to providing each family with Ksh.10,000 to facilitate a smoother relocation process. A number of affected families conveyed their current predicament, indicating that they currently have no alternative housing options and are urging for more time to ensure a smooth transition, particularly for their children’s education.

The launch of the free housing project in the county is anticipated soon, with President William Ruto expected to officiate the event.
