Sudan has recalled its ambassador from Nairobi in protest of Kenyan President William Ruto’s hosting of talks with paramilitary commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, according to the acting foreign minister.
Daglo, whose Rapid Support Forces have been in conflict with the regular army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has been visiting various African capitals during his first overseas tour amid the ongoing conflict. The move by Sudan to recall its ambassador is a response to what it perceives as the Kenyan government’s official reception for the rebel militia leader.
The strained relations between Burhan’s administration and the Kenyan government have persisted, with Nairobi seeking to mediate in the conflict by maintaining communication with Daglo.
The war, with more than 12,190 reported casualties and over seven million displaced, has strained diplomatic efforts, leaving mediation in a state of impasse due to the deep animosity between the rival generals.
