Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has resurfaced in political discussions, a year after his contentious relationship with President William Ruto’s administration. Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja recently lauded Matiang’i for his outstanding service as a public officer.
During the ‘Omogusii Thanksgiving Sabbath’ event organized by the Gusii community leaders and members on Saturday, Sakaja hailed Matiang’i as an exemplary figure from the Gusii community who had served the nation with distinction.
“While we may have had political differences, Dr. Matiang’i was undeniably a sterling public servant. His dedication and integrity were commendable,” remarked Sakaja, acknowledging the contributions of other Gusii leaders like Justice Maraga.
The event also saw calls for Matiang’i’s return to public service, with leaders advocating for his candidacy for higher positions in the future. Rigoma Ward MCA and former journalist Nyambega Gisesa expressed support for Matiang’i’s potential candidacy for the country’s top leadership role when the time is right.
“We urge CS Ezekiel Machogu to support Matiang’i’s re-entry into public service. He has proven himself as a capable leader,” Gisesa asserted, drawing parallels with recent collaborations between political rivals in Kenya.
Matiang’i, known for his notable performance in various ministerial roles under former President Uhuru Kenyatta, faced challenges when his allegiance shifted away from Ruto’s faction within the government. Despite tensions, a resolution was brokered with the intervention of Gusii leaders, leading to a period of relative calm.
While Matiang’i has maintained a low profile since then, his past achievements and reputation continue to earn him praise and speculation about his potential return to the public sphere.
