President William Ruto has reiterated that engaging in street protests and symbolic acts, such as wearing cooking pots on one’s head, will not address the issues impacting Kenyans.
Speaking during the launch of the affordable housing program in Bondeni, Nakuru County, on Saturday, Ruto emphasized the need for unity among Kenyans to bring about positive change in the country.
Ruto argued that lowering the cost of living is achievable by supporting farmers to increase food production. He urged Kenyans to work together to overcome challenges, emphasizing the urgency of breaking free from historical constraints imposed by vested interests, incompetence, and corruption.
The President highlighted his initiative to provide subsidized fertilizer to farmers, leading to increased agricultural output. He assured that measures have been put in place to continue supporting farmers in the coming year.
Addressing those engaging in street protests, Ruto said, ‘There are people causing chaos on the streets, wearing cooking pots on their heads, claiming that they want to reduce the price of flour. How will the price of flour decrease by wearing a pot on your head? We need to go back to the farms, produce food, and that’s how the price of flour will come down. Those individuals with pots on their heads should stop the nonsense.’
These remarks from Ruto come shortly after opposition leader Raila Odinga announced plans to provide guidance to his supporters regarding the high cost of living. Raila mentioned that a comprehensive statement on the matter would be released in the coming week, outlining the opposition’s stance and the position they should take as a people.
In December, Raila refuted claims that the opposition had been inactive, stating that they had consistently spoken out on various issues affecting the country. He emphasized that the opposition’s primary role is to highlight government shortcomings.”
