Ruto: Cost of Living has Decreased Significantly Since 2022

President William Ruto has credited his Kenya Kwanza administration with bringing down the cost of living since assuming office in 2022, citing targeted policy measures.

Speaking in Nairobi during the launch of the Nairobi International Trade Fair on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, the President said reforms in the agriculture sector had been central in stabilising food prices nationwide.

Fertiliser subsidy cuts production costs

Ruto pointed to the government’s fertiliser subsidy as a major milestone, noting that the price of a 50kg bag had fallen from Ksh7,500 to Ksh2,500 in two years.

“This reduction has lowered production costs and consequently made food more affordable,” he said, adding that the price of a 90kg bag of maize has dropped by 31 per cent, easing pressure on households and slowing inflation.

He also highlighted the Kenya Integrated Agriculture Management System, introduced in 2023, which has expanded farmer registration from 300,000 in 2024 to 7.1 million currently. The platform, he said, eliminates middlemen while giving government accurate, real-time data for informed decision-making.

Agricultural transformation on track

The President further reported that tea production has risen by 12 per cent since 2022, attributing the growth to government-backed programmes. Other cash crops, he added, are equally benefitting from the reforms.

“Though we’ve had challenges along the way, our efforts are paying off. Kenyans are experiencing relief from high food costs and enjoying more stable production,” Ruto remarked.

He concluded by affirming that the country was making steady progress toward food security and better livelihoods, sentiments that set the agenda for this year’s Nairobi International Trade Fair, which showcases innovations and investment opportunities in agriculture under the Kenya Kwanza government.
