Speaking during a public address in Kisumu on Thursday, Raila said the housing programme aligns with broader efforts to improve the lives of ordinary Kenyans.

“Providing decent and affordable housing is part of a long-standing plan to meet the needs of our people. We started this initiative years ago to address five key issues: shelter, food, housing, health, and education,” he said.

He noted that his land donation was intended to support the government’s development agenda and revealed additional plans to construct a school and hospital on the site.

“This is about transforming lives now—not waiting for another administration to act,” Raila added.

President William Ruto, who was present at the event, praised Raila’s gesture, calling it an act of goodwill for the people of Kisumu.

“Though this land belongs to Raila, I sincerely thank him for his contribution,” Ruto said. “This project will benefit the people of Kisumu by providing decent housing options at an affordable price.”

The president announced that the government will invest Sh3.2 billion in the Kisumu project, which aims to deliver 750 housing units in 18 months. The units will cater primarily to low-income earners, such as boda boda riders and market traders.

Ruto also unveiled broader plans to construct 15,000 affordable homes in Kisumu County, with 2,400 units already underway.

“We want Kenyans to stop paying rent forever. It’s time for them to own homes through manageable mortgage payments,” he said.
