The 88-year-old pontiff has been battling a respiratory infection for more than a week and has been receiving treatment at the Gemelli hospital in Rome.
“The chest CT scan that the Pope underwent showed the onset of bilateral pneumonia, which required additional drug treatment,” the Vatican said.
The Vatican said that laboratory tests and a chest X-ray performed on the Pope “continue to indicate a serious condition.”
However, the Vatican announced that the Pope remained “spiritual” and spent his day “reading, resting and praying.”
Pope Francis also expressed his gratitude to those sending him condolences and asked them to “pray for him.”
He was scheduled to lead several events over the weekend of the 2025 Holy Year of the Catholic Church, which will run until next January, however all public events on the Pope’s schedule have been suspended until Sunday.

During his 12 years as head of the Roman Catholic Church, the Argentine leader has been hospitalized several times, including in March 2023 when he was hospitalized for three nights.
