Political Tension Erupts as Matiang’i Condemns Natembeya Attack

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has strongly condemned the chaotic incident in Kabuchai where Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya was disrupted during a campaign event, questioning how it happened despite several security organs being present in the region.

Matiang’i expressed concern over the preparedness and coordination of security teams on the ground, saying the situation raised serious questions about oversight and accountability.

“They disrupted Governor Natembeya while he was addressing a rally in Kabuchai. Having been in charge of security before, I cannot understand how the County Commissioner, county security team, County Police Commander, Regional Police Commander, and the wider security leadership were unaware of what happened,” he said.

He insisted that the incident could not be brushed aside or labeled as a minor confrontation.

Matiang’i was referring to the November 22 incident in Kabuchai Ward, Bungoma County, where Natembeya was forced to leave a campaign rally for independent MCA candidate Eric Wekesa ahead of the November 27 by-election.

The meeting at a local trading centre was thrown into disarray following loud explosions believed to be from tear gas, causing panic among attendees. Witnesses said a group stormed the venue, throwing objects and attempting to interrupt the rally.

Police eventually intervened and escorted Natembeya away to ensure his safety. A vehicle and a house linked to a politician allied to Natembeya’s team were reported damaged, though no serious injuries were recorded.

DAP-K, Natembeya’s party, blamed the violence on alleged groups linked to National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, claiming it was an attempt to intimidate voters. The party urged the IEBC and the National Police Service to act decisively to prevent further escalation.

The incident has heightened political tensions in Bungoma, with rival camps accusing each other of trying to assert dominance.

In a separate remark, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi warned that Kenya Kwanza leaders would challenge Natembeya’s political influence and field a strong opponent in the 2027 elections.

Matiang’i’s comments have renewed attention on the conduct of security agencies and raised calls for answers over how the disturbance occurred under their watch.
