A police officer was killed on Friday evening after being stabbed by a colleague during an altercation at Salama Police Post in Laikipia West Constituency.
Police said Constable Abel Kivoto Kimanzi succumbed to stab wounds after allegedly being attacked by Constable Victor Chesang’ Mengich, 42, while both were on duty. The confrontation turned fatal before members of the public from the nearby Salama shopping centre intervened.
The officer in charge of the post, Sergeant Wahome Muigai Muiruri, said he responded to distress calls and found Mengich armed with a knife. Kimanzi had been stabbed in the abdomen and later died from his injuries.
The cause of the altercation has not been established. Witnesses said Sergeant Muigai and another officer attempted to restrain the suspect but were injured in the process. Members of the public later helped subdue Mengich.
Both Mengich and Muigai were treated at Salama dispensary before being referred to Nyahururu County and Referral Hospital. Muigai was treated and discharged, while Mengich was detained at Nyahururu Police Station pending investigations.
Kimanzi’s body was taken to a local mortuary for autopsy.
The incident comes amid rising concern over mental health challenges within the police service, following recent cases of officer suicides. Authorities say measures are being implemented, including counselling and outreach programmes, to address stress, trauma and substance abuse among officers.
