Police in Eldoret Seize Bhang Valued at Sh9.5 Million

Police in Eldoret have impounded a lorry transporting six sacks of bhang with an estimated street value of Sh9.5 million.

According to Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi, the drugs were hidden beneath other parcels in an attempt to evade security checks.

He said officers at Baharini Police Station acted on a tip-off from the public, intercepted the lorry upon its arrival in Eldoret, and arrested the driver, who will be arraigned in court.

The operation comes just weeks after another lorry carrying 12 sacks of bhang worth more than Sh23 million was intercepted in the same region, leading to the arrest of two suspects.

Mwanthi noted that traffickers were increasingly trying to use Eldoret as a transit route, but police had intensified surveillance along major highways. He warned that narcotics posed a grave danger to society, particularly to the youth.

“We will not allow this illegal trade to thrive. Our officers are on high alert, and anyone caught will face the law,” he said, adding that the police would step up the use of sniffer dogs and modern detection tools.

He further cautioned transporters against letting their vehicles be used in trafficking, saying those involved risk losing their trucks to state forfeiture.

Police have assured the public of continued vigilance to dismantle drug cartels and curb the flow of narcotics in the region.
