Passaris: Embakasi Fire Victims to Get Sh5,000 Each

Embakasi fire survivors are set to receive assistance in the form of Sh5,000 each, announced by Nairobi Women Representative Esther Passaris. Passaris emphasized that the County Government is actively engaged in supporting the injured individuals during this challenging period.

She mentioned, “We are providing them with Sh5,000 each because we understand that they will require accommodation and meals tonight.” Passaris also highlighted that Governor Johnson Sakaja has instructed that the patients from the fire incident receive free medical treatment.

Expressing condolences to the families affected by the midnight fire, Passaris addressed the media at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital on Friday, where she noted a shortage of medication due to the high influx of patients seeking treatment. She mentioned that through swift mobilization, they managed to procure medication worth approximately Sh400,000 to replenish the hospital’s supplies, with more aid en route.

Furthermore, Passaris highlighted the limited budget allocation from the National Government Affirmative Action Fund (NGAAF) Nairobi for disaster management, stressing the need for additional funds. She mentioned plans to acquire mattresses for the survivors, especially those whose homes were destroyed, with only a hundred mattresses currently available. Additionally, Passaris mentioned the provision of bread and sodas to the survivors and explained the process of patients being examined by doctors before awaiting prescribed medication in a designated tent.

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura, present at the scene of the incident, confirmed that up to 280 individuals sustained injuries in the fire. Among the injured, 43 were transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital, 17 to Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital, 157 to Mama Lucy General Hospital, and 18 to Komarock’s Modern Hospital. Various other patients were distributed across different medical facilities for treatment.
