James Orengo has announced that he is now serving as the acting leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), citing the need for fresh direction and stronger leadership as the country approaches the next election cycle.
Speaking at a Linda Mwananchi rally in Nakuru, the Siaya Governor said the party must reorganise and refine its strategy to stay competitive. He noted that while Edwin Sifuna remains the party’s secretary general, he (Orengo) has stepped in as acting leader.

ODM, traditionally led by Raila Odinga, has recently faced growing debate over succession and internal unity ahead of the upcoming general elections.
Earlier, on March 3, the party’s Parliamentary Group endorsed the appointment of Oburu Oginga as party leader during a joint meeting. The session reviewed party activities, upcoming programmes, and key political positions.
Among the resolutions, members backed closer collaboration with United Democratic Alliance (UDA), including plans for structured coalition talks ahead of the 2027 elections. They also supported compensation efforts for victims of past election-related abuses and endorsed the party’s withdrawal from the Azimio coalition.

Additionally, ODM plans to hold a special National Delegates Convention on March 27, 2027, and will convene a joint meeting with UDA MPs to assess progress on a shared ten-point agenda.
The resolutions were confirmed in a statement signed by Junet Mohamed and Stewart Madzayo.
