Police said officers who arrived at the scene recovered five spent 9mm cartridges, confirming that a shooting had taken place.

Tensions rose when officers attempted to access the scene, but were met by a hostile group of residents who blocked entry into the house where the body had been secured. During the confrontation, one individual allegedly tried to stab an officer, prompting police to fire warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd before withdrawing to the station.

Authorities later returned and retrieved the body on Tuesday morning after several hours of delay. The victim had sustained gunshot wounds in the armpit. The motive for the killing remains unknown, with a special police unit deployed to track down suspected gangs behind the attack.

In a separate incident in Kakamega County, police in Khwisero are investigating a robbery shooting that left a 25-year-old shopkeeper and M-Pesa agent seriously injured in Irumbi ‘A’ village.

The attack occurred around 8:30pm on Monday as the trader was closing his shop. Preliminary reports indicate that two masked men approached the victim, and one allegedly armed with a rifle shot him near the left collarbone after he tried to resist.

The assailants reportedly broke into a safe inside the shop and stole an unspecified amount of cash from the day’s sales and mobile money transactions. They also took the victim’s mobile phone before escaping on a waiting motorcycle.

The injured trader was first taken to Yala Level IV Hospital before being referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialized treatment. Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the type of firearm used and identify the attackers.
