Same Old Story? Arsenal’s Title Hopes Dented

Manchester City dealt Arsenal FC a 2-1 defeat on Sunday night at the Etihad, tightening the English Premier League title battle and reviving Arsenal’s familiar frustration of coming close but falling short.

Side managed by Pep Guardiola now trail the Gunners by just three points with a game in hand, putting them in a strong position as the season nears its climax.

For the third straight campaign, Arsenal risk experiencing the pain of being within reach of the title but not securing it. They finished runners-up last season behind Liverpool, and in 2023–24 lost the crown to City by just two points. In 2022–23, City topped the table with 89 points while Arsenal followed on 81.

City took the lead through a brilliant solo effort from Rayan Cherki, who weaved past defenders before curling the ball into the far corner. However, Arsenal responded almost immediately after a costly mistake by goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma allowed Kai Havertz to force in an equaliser.

The teams went into halftime level at 1-1 after an entertaining first half.

In the 65th minute, Erling Haaland struck the decisive goal. After clever movement from Rodri drew defenders away, the ball fell kindly to Haaland, who calmly finished to seal the win for City.

Reactions

City captain Bernardo Silva said the victory was crucial, noting it puts them level on points with Arsenal if they win their game in hand—something that seemed unlikely just weeks ago.

He praised Haaland’s effort, saying the striker “fought for every ball” against tough defenders, and highlighted how fine margins decided the match despite City largely controlling play.
