A fuel tanker exploded after colliding with another truck along Nairobi’s Southern Bypass near Carnivore Restaurant, leaving one person dead and causing major traffic disruption.
The accident happened on Saturday, sparking panic along the busy route near Wilson Airport. Both trucks, including the fuel tanker, caught fire, producing thick black smoke that reduced visibility and blocked the highway.

The tanker came to rest on the left side of the dual carriageway, with part of its trailer spilling onto Swaminarayan Street below the tunnel. The intense blaze forced authorities to close the road entirely in both directions.
Emergency teams, including police and Kenya Airports Authority fire crews, rushed to the scene to control the fire and manage traffic. The Kenya Red Cross said access to the area was restricted to ensure public safety while operations continued.
“The highway has been temporarily closed. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes,” the Red Cross confirmed.
Authorities later verified that one of the drivers involved had died, though details about the victim’s identity and the condition of others involved were not immediately released.
Incidents involving fuel tankers and other large trucks have occurred across Kenya in recent years, often resulting from collisions, rollovers, or mechanical failures.
These accidents frequently trigger fires or explosions, posing serious risks to motorists and surrounding infrastructure.
