Acting Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party Leader Dr. Oburu Oginga has defended Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, saying the Secretary-General has been accurately communicating the party’s official position and should not face criticism or isolation.
Speaking during an interview with NTV, Oburu dismissed talk of disciplinary action against Sifuna, urging members to focus on unity rather than internal wrangles.

“When Sifuna speaks, he does so within his mandate — that is the correct position of the party. He is not isolated,” Oburu said.
He emphasized that Sifuna’s statements reflect ODM’s collective stance, not personal opinions, adding that the senator has remained loyal and diligent in fulfilling his duties.
“I don’t think this is the time to talk about removing anyone from office. We must unite the party, and that includes working with Sifuna. In my view, he is doing a commendable job,” he added.
Oburu’s remarks come amid growing debate within ODM following Sifuna’s recent comments dismissing claims that the party has a post-2027 deal with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
While some ODM members have argued that the party will support President William Ruto’s re-election bid, Sifuna has maintained that no such agreement exists — a position now backed by Oburu.
Oburu underscored that the party’s strength lies in solidarity and respect for leaders entrusted with articulating its official position, especially as ODM navigates new political realities after the passing of its founder, Raila Odinga.

Following Raila’s death, Oburu was appointed acting party leader. The ODM Central Management Committee last week unanimously endorsed him as the substantive leader, pledging full support for his leadership.
In a statement issued after the meeting, Sifuna said the party’s top organ had laid a solid foundation for unity and urged the media to avoid fueling narratives of division.
“This being the first meeting since the passing of our leader, the committee endorsed Hon. Dr. Oburu Oginga as the new party leader and called for collective support to guide ODM through this transition,” Sifuna announced.
