In light of over 4,000 recorded road accident deaths linked to drug abuse, the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) is advocating for responsible alcohol use during the festive season. Patrick Obura, Director of Corporate Services at NACADA, emphasized the need for caution while launching a drug and substance abuse sensitization campaign in Busia County.

Highlighting the prevalence of accidents in the area due to irresponsible drug use, Obura expressed concern about alcohol being one of the most abused substances in Kenya. Statistics reveal that 11.8 percent of Kenyans abuse alcohol, but in Busia, the average prevalence of alcohol use is notably higher at 23 percent. He urged residents to join the fight against alcohol abuse.
Obura specifically called on motorbike riders to exercise greater vigilance and avoid substance abuse to contribute to the reduction of road accidents. Busia County Commissioner Kipchumba Rutto echoed Obura’s sentiments, urging residents to actively participate in NACADA’s ongoing campaign against drug abuse in the region.
