MP Jayne Kihara Says Her Life Is in Danger, Holds President Ruto Responsible

Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara has alleged that her life is at risk following the withdrawal of her bodyguard, accusing President William Ruto of using state security to intimidate political allies of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Speaking during a press conference on Friday, Kihara claimed she now feels exposed and unsafe, directly blaming the President should anything happen to her. She urged him to honour his campaign promise of not using security agencies to settle political differences.

“If anything happens to me, President Ruto will be held responsible. You sat with us, including Gachagua, and promised never to misuse state security for political ends. That’s exactly what is happening now,” Kihara said.

“Mr. President, I feel completely exposed. I’m a small person — why use such force against me? Please return my security detail and let me live. Stripping me of protection suggests harm is intended.”

Kihara referenced the recent fatal shooting of Kasipul MP Charles Were to highlight the dangers politicians face, insisting that MPs have a constitutional right to security.

“This is not a joke — MPs are entitled to bodyguards. Look at what happened to our colleague. Are we now supposed to rely on gangs with pangas or clubs for protection?” she questioned.

She revealed that her bodyguard was recalled on Wednesday, disarmed, and had his phone confiscated. He was reportedly questioned about a shootout at the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) headquarters — an event he did not attend.

The MP believes the move to remove her security is politically motivated, aimed at punishing her for associating with Gachagua.

“If supporting Gachagua is now a crime, then where is our political freedom? I stood with Ruto during his campaign when he left Jubilee. That was my choice, and now I choose to stand with Gachagua. That shouldn’t warrant punishment,” she asserted.

Her remarks come amid escalating tensions within the Kenya Kwanza coalition. Earlier this week, Gachagua also claimed his life was in danger, alleging that intelligence officers were pursuing him with plans to use poison-laced tear gas during a church event in Murang’a County.
