Mimi Ni Mzabibu: A Hilarious TikTok Trend Takes Over the Kenyan Internet

A recent TikTok sensation called ‘Mzabibu’ is rapidly gaining popularity across the Kenyan internet as individuals showcase their most amusing dance moves to the infectious beats of the song. Originating a few days prior to the weekend, this trend is centered around the song ‘Mzabibu,’ performed by a Mijikenda artist named Zablon K. Ndale.

As the chorus sets in, participants unleash their comedic dance routines—donned in eccentric attire, they sway their hips and swing their arms in exaggerated motions, ensuring to bend over and energetically jerk around to the rhythm.

The challenge was initiated by a female TikTok user with the handle @aggie.kamau, seen dancing inside a kiosk. It swiftly gained momentum, with numerous users joining in, including @official_mickey_, who significantly popularized the unconventional dance moves. Mickey, dressed in green pants and an olive shirt, humorously shuffles around, gesturing extensively and kicking his feet as the song picks up pace.

Thousands of Kenyans have already submitted their unique interpretations of the viral challenge, some doing it shirtless and others from the confines of their classrooms.

The key to mastering the challenge is to pretend you are living in the early 1970s, and the hilarity ensues from there.

Even First Daughter Charlene Ruto, known for her amiable nature, has embraced the challenge and predictably delivered an entertaining performance.

The song’s lyrics go: “Mimi ni mzabibuu, baba ni mkurimaa, nanwi mmatai shalaani matunda kisha gakule…” Translated, the rich Mijikenda lyrics convey, “I am the vine, and the father is the farmer, and you are the branches. Therefore, bear fruit…”

In just four days since its release, the song has already garnered an impressive 19k views on YouTube.

To excel in the challenge, participants are encouraged to embrace their silliest selves—choose the quirkiest outfit, make the goofiest face, move their bodies in the most comical way, and if possible, go the extra mile in looking amusingly daft.
