Matiang’i Endorses Kalonzo for Joint Opposition Ticket

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has announced that he would support Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka should the opposition unite and choose him as its joint presidential candidate in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on Friday during the Wiper National Delegates Conference (NDC) at Uhuru Park, Matiang’i urged opposition leaders to put the country’s interests above personal ambitions and rally behind a single flagbearer capable of taking on President William Ruto.

“We have agreed that we must put ambition and everything else aside for the sake of our nation,” Matiang’i told delegates. “When we come together and decide that you, Kalonzo, are the candidate, I will stand with you, and we will all support you.”

He stressed that the process of identifying a joint opposition candidate should be consultative, fair, and inclusive, noting that only unity could give the opposition a real chance in 2027.

“I believe that when that time comes, after consultation and agreement on a fair method to choose a candidate, we must all rally behind that person. If that person is you, we will fully support you,” he added.

Matiang’i further pointed out that forming a strong coalition requires patience, compromise, and mutual respect, saying, “Building an opposition alliance is a journey of alignment and collaboration. We will stay united despite our differences, not because we don’t have them.”

His comments come as opposition leaders intensify efforts to consolidate their ranks and form a unified front ahead of the 2027 polls.

The NDC brought together several key opposition figures, including Eugene Wamalwa (DAP–K), Martha Karua (NARC–Kenya), and Rigathi Gachagua (DCP), among others seen as potential presidential contenders.

Their continued joint appearances at political gatherings have been viewed as a signal of growing solidarity within the opposition, even as questions remain over who will eventually carry the coalition’s flag.

Kalonzo Musyoka, a seasoned politician and former Vice President, has increasingly emerged as a central figure in discussions about the opposition’s 2027 strategy.

In recent weeks, opposition leaders have launched coordinated rallies and conferences across the country to consolidate their support bases and reassure their followers of their commitment to a united challenge against the ruling coalition.
