Matatu Torched After Fatally Hitting Boda Boda Rider in Kiambu

Authorities are investigating an incident in Kiambu County where a matatu was set on fire after it ran over a boda boda rider at the Gitaru Interchange in Kikuyu on Wednesday.

The 14-seater vehicle struck and killed a 22-year-old boda boda rider who was delivering a carpet. Witnesses said the matatu was making a turn at a dangerous spot when the collision occurred, sparking anger among fellow riders.

In retaliation, boda boda operators temporarily blocked the busy Nairobi–Nakuru highway before setting the matatu ablaze, drawing large crowds and causing severe traffic congestion. The matatu driver reportedly fled the scene for safety.

Police later arrived, took the rider’s body to the mortuary for an autopsy, and towed the burnt matatu to the local police station. Authorities confirmed an investigation is ongoing.

This incident is part of a growing trend of boda boda riders taking matters into their own hands after fatal accidents. Similar cases have recently occurred in Salgaa and Nairobi’s Embakasi area, where buses and minibuses have been torched following collisions.

Calls for stricter regulations in the boda boda sector are increasing, despite opposition from some operators.
