Mackenzie and Co-defendants Arrive at Mombasa Court in a State of Hunger and Weakness

Paul Mackenzie, a controversial preacher, along with his co-defendants in the Shakahola massacre case, made their way to the High Court in Mombasa to await the decision on their bond applications.

Several members of Mackenzie’s Good News International Ministries appeared frail and malnourished. Some struggled to stand in the dock, reportedly engaging in a hunger strike and refraining from eating for the past three days.

High Court Judge Alex Ithuku directed them to remain in the court’s holding area and be represented by their legal counsel during the proceedings.

During their previous court appearance last week, Mackenzie and 38 of his co-defendants faced charges including subjecting children to torture, assault, cruelty, and violating a child’s right to education.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions expressed intent to oppose bail for the suspects, citing concerns about their potential to flee.
