KQ Flight Returns to Nairobi After Failed Landing in Kigali

Kenya Airways has confirmed that one of its aircraft was compelled to head back to Nairobi on Saturday morning after facing adverse weather while attempting to land in Rwanda.

Flight KQ470, which had departed from Nairobi to Kigali, encountered poor visibility and worsening weather conditions during its routine approach to Kigali International Airport at around 9:10 am East African Time.

After making two unsuccessful landing attempts, the crew decided to divert the plane back to Nairobi as a precautionary safety measure.

In a statement, the airline said that on February 15, 2026, KQ470 experienced low visibility and deteriorating weather during its approach into Kigali. Following the failed landing attempts, the pilots opted to return to Nairobi to ensure the safety of passengers and crew.

The aircraft touched down safely in Nairobi at 10:39 am. Once weather conditions in Kigali improved, the flight was cleared to depart again at 12:07 pm and later landed safely in Kigali at 1:31 pm.

Kenya Airways explained that air turnbacks are part of standard safety protocols, though the incident resulted in a ripple delay affecting flight KQ270 from Nairobi to Mauritius. The Mauritius-bound flight, initially scheduled to leave at 12:40 pm, was pushed to 4:40 pm.

The airline said it had reached out to impacted passengers and was offering the necessary support, while apologising for the disruption.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused and reassure our customers that the safety of our passengers and crew remains our top priority,” the statement added.
