Police reported that a pastor had gathered 24 people for the religious exercise in the Pope area. About half had already been baptized when Loice Kahindi Charo began convulsing and struggling to breathe shortly after being immersed in the water.
She was pulled to the shore, where pastors continued praying for her, mistaking her condition for a spiritual episode rather than a medical emergency. Witnesses said no first aid was administered at the time.
When her condition deteriorated further, she was rushed to a hospital in Vipingo but was declared dead on arrival.
Police have since launched investigations, questioned pastors and witnesses at the scene, and moved the body to the mortuary for autopsy.
