Kenya Railways Adds Voi Stop for Night Madaraka Express

Kenya Railways has announced that the 10pm Madaraka Express passenger train will make a three-minute stopover at Voi Station, both on its way to and from Nairobi, starting December 15.

Previously, the Madaraka Express made daytime stops at Voi Station but did not stop at night. In January 2023, a five-minute night stop was briefly introduced before being suspended.

The reintroduction of the night stopover follows a promise made by President Ruto during a development tour in Taita Taveta County. In a notice issued on Friday, Kenya Railways confirmed that the train traveling from Nairobi will stop at Voi from 2:05 AM to 2:08 AM, while the train from Mombasa to Nairobi will halt from 11:45 PM to 11:48 PM.

The announcement reads: “Kenya Railways is pleased to announce that, effective December 15, the 10pm Madaraka Express passenger service train to and from Nairobi terminus will now make a three-minute stopover at Voi Station.”

During his visit to Taita Taveta County on December 4, 2024, President Ruto assured residents that the night train would begin making the stop to support local businesses. He stated, “You have asked me that the train passing here, especially at night, does not stop… you want it to stop here so you can travel? I have engaged the relevant ministry, and they have assured me it will start making a stop.”

Kenya Railways also operates inter-county trains that depart from both the Mombasa and Nairobi termini at 8:00 am daily, with scheduled stops at Mariakani, Miasenyi, Voi, Mtito Andei, Kibwezi, Emali, and Athi River stations.
