Kenya Power has rolled out new meter reading technology aimed at enhancing accuracy, speed, and efficiency in collecting customer consumption data, marking a key step in its digital transformation journey.
The company announced on Monday, November 24, 2025, that it is implementing Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology across all eight regions. The system allows meter readers to scan meter displays for instant digital capture, replacing the traditional manual entry of meter numbers and readings.

According to Kenya Power, the technology is expected to minimize human errors and reduce the time spent collecting monthly data from postpaid customers. Richard Wida, the company’s Commercial Cycle Manager, said, “With OCR, meter readings are captured automatically, saving time and eliminating manual entry errors.”
The rollout follows a successful six-month pilot in Nairobi from March to September 2025 and will be expanded to all 1.8 million postpaid meters that still require physical readings. The new system is also designed to address billing anomalies, which have been a common source of customer complaints.

Kenya Power has also been expanding digital self-service platforms like the Mypower App and USSD code *977#, allowing customers to check bills, report outages, and submit self-readings. The OCR technology is expected to integrate into these platforms, enabling customers to submit accurate readings with minimal effort.

Additionally, the company has deployed smart meters for large power users, SMEs, and select domestic customers. These meters allow two-way communication, enabling remote reading, disconnections, and reconnections without site visits.
Kenya Power says the adoption of OCR and smart metering technologies will modernize operations, improve billing accuracy, and enhance overall customer experience in the coming months.
