According to the advisory released on Thursday, the warning period will start at 3 a.m. on May 23 and end at 11 a.m. on May 25. The department estimates a moderate probability of occurrence, ranging between 33% and 66%.

Strong southerly winds exceeding 30 knots (15.4 m/s) are anticipated over the Coast, South-eastern lowlands, and North-western Kenya on Friday. These winds are forecasted to intensify to over 35 knots (18.0 m/s) during the weekend before easing to around 25 knots (12.9 m/s) by Monday, May 26.

Additionally, wave heights over coastal waters are expected to rise above two meters from Friday through Sunday, before subsiding to less than two meters on Monday.

The counties likely to be affected include Marsabit, Turkana, Samburu, Isiolo, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale.

Residents in these areas are urged to be cautious, especially of potential gales and large ocean waves. The department warns that strong winds could damage structures and roofs, while rough seas may hinder visibility and disrupt marine activities.

The Met Department assured the public of timely updates should any changes occur.

This advisory comes amid ongoing heavy rainfall in several parts of the country. Earlier this week, the department highlighted regions expected to receive continued rainfall between May 20 and May 26, including the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Coast, Western, and North-western Kenya.

Daytime temperatures are expected to reach around 30°C in coastal, northeastern, northwestern, and southeastern areas, while nighttime temperatures could fall below 10°C in parts of the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, Central Rift Valley, and the Mt. Kilimanjaro region.
