Kenya has acquired 10,700 doses of the Mpox vaccine as part of its ongoing efforts to protect vulnerable populations and enhance preparedness for emerging health threats.

The consignment arrived at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Wednesday night and was received by Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni.
While addressing the press at the airport, PS Muthoni emphasized that priority in vaccine distribution will be given to the most affected groups, noting that the country has so far recorded 68 cases and one fatality.

“The Mpox vaccine rollout is a vital milestone in Kenya’s efforts to strengthen public health protection. However, no single entity can achieve this alone—we urge all stakeholders to collaborate in building effective, people-focused systems for pandemic readiness,” she said.
She stressed the importance of joint efforts in anticipating and managing public health threats before they escalate.
The vaccines will be allocated to 14 high-risk counties, particularly those with higher transmission rates and proximity to border regions. These include Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Kajiado, Machakos, Kiambu, Busia, Migori, Turkana, Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera.
