KeNHA Contracts Chinese Firm to Redesign Kisumu’s Deadly Coptic Roundabout

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has engaged China Railway Tenth Group (CREC No. 10), a subsidiary of the China Railway Engineering Corporation, to redesign the Coptic roundabout along the Kisumu–Kakamega highway.

The move comes a week after 26 mourners perished in a tragic crash at the black spot, sparking public outrage and calls for immediate intervention.

According to project foreman Martin Kizito, the redesign works commenced with the demolition of the roundabout and realignment of the junction.

“KeNHA gave us three days to complete this phase as we await further directives,” he noted.

The decision follows acts of vandalism last Friday night when unknown persons blocked the roundabout, further escalating safety concerns.

Nyakach MP Aduma Owuor, who visited Roads CS Davis Chirchir alongside Teso North MP Oku Kaunya, said leaders were pressing for a permanent solution to the “killer roundabout.”

While works continue, some locals insist the accidents are largely caused by reckless driving, not the roundabout itself.

“Drivers must stop using free gear on this road—that is the real danger,” said resident Christopher Onyango.

The 26 victims of the recent tragedy were buried last Saturday in Nyakach Sub-County.
