Two young lovers tragically died from suffocation in a generator room in Mogonga, Kenyenya, Kisii County, while spending time together on Monday night.
Police reported that the couple, a man and a woman, were found dead long after the incident, having slept with the generator running. The device emitted carbon monoxide, which led to their deaths. Authorities have launched an investigation into the tragedy.

The generator, which powers a local bar where the male victim worked, had run out of diesel. A bar manager went to refuel it and discovered the couple’s bodies on a bed. He immediately rushed them to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
Medical officials confirmed suffocation due to carbon monoxide inhalation as the cause of death.
The bodies have been taken to a local mortuary pending autopsy and further investigation.
Carbon monoxide, like that produced by a generator or traditional jiko, is a colorless and odorless gas that interferes with the body’s ability to transport oxygen. According to the World Health Organization, the gas binds with hemoglobin in red blood cells, forming toxic carboxyhaemoglobin, which prevents oxygen circulation.
Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning include headaches, dizziness, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, chest discomfort, nasal congestion, red eyes, and confusion. Risk is particularly high while asleep in poorly ventilated areas.
