KDF Divers Retrieve Body from 80-Foot Deep Dam After 6-Day Search

Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) personnel have successfully recovered the body of a man who had drowned in Chepkorio Dam, located in Ngeria, Uasin Gishu County, following a six-day search operation.

The operation, carried out along the Eldoret–Nakuru highway, involved a team from the Kenya Navy Clearance Diving Unit (KN CDU) and the 9th Battalion, Kenya Rifles (9 KR).

According to a statement from KDF, the body was recovered on September 13, 2025, concluding an intensive search and rescue mission that had been ongoing for nearly a week.

Earlier efforts by local divers and other response teams were unsuccessful due to the dam’s depth—approximately 80 feet—and challenging underwater conditions.

To address these difficulties, KDF deployed a specialized diving unit equipped with JJ Closed Circuit Rebreather (CCR) systems. These advanced systems allowed divers to stay submerged longer and search areas beyond the reach of traditional SCUBA gear, enabling them to locate and retrieve the body more efficiently.

The remains were later handed over to local police for official procedures.

KDF emphasized that the operation demonstrated their personnel’s skill, dedication, and technical capabilities in humanitarian missions. It also aligned with their broader role in supporting national disaster response and resilience.

The Defence Forces extended their condolences to the bereaved family, wishing them strength and comfort during this time of loss.
