Caleb Kositany, Chairman of the Kenya Airports Authority Board, explained that the new terminal will enable quick conversion of incoming sea freight into air freight for faster distribution to landlocked neighboring countries.
He highlighted that the integration of various transport systems in Africa—including air freight, maritime shipping, rail, and road networks—will create efficient trade routes.
“These efforts are key to realizing the goals of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA),” Kositany stated.
At the opening of the Air Cargo Africa and Transport Logistics Africa 2025 Conference, Kositany also emphasized Kenya’s efforts to improve its road infrastructure to boost regional and intra-African trade. He pointed to the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport Corridor (LAPSSET) as a vital trade route that must be leveraged effectively.
Kositany noted that the connection between LAPSSET and Isiolo International Airport presents a strategic opportunity for quick cargo movement throughout Africa, with Isiolo’s central location enabling rapid air transport across the continent.
The Mombasa project is expected to enhance Kenya’s position as a major trade hub, reducing transit times for goods across Africa.
KAA stated that the initiative is part of broader efforts to integrate Africa’s transport networks and streamline logistics to facilitate trade under AfCFTA.
Government agencies, including the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and the Shippers Council of Eastern Africa (SCEA), are currently engaged in discussions on air cargo trade policies and regulations.
