Kenya’s Junior Starlets are on the verge of securing their first-ever berth in the 2024 Fifa U17 Women’s World Cup, following a commanding 3-0 victory over Burundi in Ethiopia last Sunday.
Goals by Lorna Faith, Marion Serenge, and Susan Akoth in the 11th, 43rd, and 71st minutes respectively propelled Kenya to a decisive win in the opening leg of the final qualifying round at the Abebe Bikila Stadium in Addis Ababa.
This triumph gives Kenya a significant advantage as they look ahead to the second leg scheduled for June 16. Head coach Mildred Cheche expressed her elation at the result, commending her team for their exceptional performance.
Despite the victory, Cheche emphasized the need for continued hard work until the job is complete.
Assistant coach Anne ‘Aunty’ Aluoch highlighted the familiarity gained from playing on the same pitch earlier, giving them an edge over their opponents. She stressed the importance of intense preparation for the upcoming match, anticipating a tough challenge from Burundi.
Captain Elizabeth Ochoka voiced her confidence in the team’s ability to secure qualification, attributing their success to addressing previous weaknesses and executing the coaches’ instructions effectively.
The aggregate winner of the two-legged tie will secure an automatic qualification for the 2024 Fifa U17 Women’s World Cup in the Dominican Republic.
The squad comprises talented players from various schools and clubs across Kenya, forming a promising blend of emerging talents.
