Isiolo: Couple Injured in Lion Attack

A man and his wife are currently receiving treatment at Isiolo County Teaching and Referral Hospital after they were assaulted and managed to fend off an aggressive lion on Tuesday evening.

Michael Apayu and his wife Susan Chebet were returning home from collecting firewood in the forest when a stray lion suddenly appeared and pounced on Chebet.

Apayu recounted that his wife defended herself by striking the lion on the head with a machete, prompting the lion to bite her leg in retaliation.

As Apayu attempted to rescue his wife from the ferocious animal, he too was attacked, sustaining bites on his leg and shoulder.

This incident occurred amidst protests by students from Multimedia University on Tuesday, February 6, 2024, who blocked roads in Rongai, Kajiado County, following a hyena attack on one of their peers.

Transport was disrupted on the road near the campus from 7 am, as students voiced grievances over what they perceived as negligence on the part of the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS).

“We are advocating for our safety; we refuse to let our fellow students fall prey to hyenas. The government needs to address this issue by either relocating the campus or ensuring the KWS contains the animals within Nairobi National Park,” stated one of the students.

Another student shared, “Our fellow student, Kevin Mwendwa, was attacked by a hyena, and there have been several similar incidents. We demand action to protect our safety.”

Kevin Mwendwa, a 21-year-old student, was attacked by a hyena along Masai Lodge Road at 8 pm on Monday, February 5. He was initially treated at Wana Hospital before being transferred to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) for further medical care.
