Inside the Cyber Incident That Hit the President’s Website

The government has temporarily suspended public access to the official Presidential website after detecting a cybersecurity incident, with investigations and recovery efforts currently underway.

In a statement released on Saturday, July 18, 2026, Information, Communications and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo said authorities acted swiftly after identifying the incident.

He explained that the ICT Authority immediately activated its cybersecurity response procedures to contain the situation.

“As a precautionary measure, access to the Presidential website was temporarily restricted to facilitate containment, forensic analysis and restoration efforts,” Kabogo said.

He noted that mitigation measures had already been implemented and that technical teams were working to restore the website.

Kabogo assured Kenyans that preliminary investigations had found no indication that sensitive government data had been compromised.

“So far, there is no evidence of unauthorised access to sensitive information, data exfiltration or data loss,” he said.

He further emphasized that government digital systems and online services remain secure and fully operational despite the incident.

The Cabinet Secretary said the ICT Authority is collaborating with relevant government agencies and technical experts to establish the cause and scope of the breach through a detailed forensic investigation.

However, the ministry did not reveal when the incident occurred, the nature of the suspected cyberattack, or how long the Presidential website would remain unavailable.

Officials maintained that appropriate containment measures were put in place immediately and restoration efforts are progressing.

At the time of publication, users attempting to access the website were met with a maintenance notice reading: “We’ll be back soon! Sorry for the inconvenience, but we’re performing some maintenance at the moment. We’ll be back online shortly!”

Kabogo reiterated that there is currently no evidence that sensitive information was accessed or stolen and said the government will issue further updates once investigations are complete and the website has been fully restored.
