The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has urged political leaders to refrain from making statements that could erode public confidence in Kenya’s electoral system.

In a statement released on Sunday, the commission raised alarm over recent comments suggesting possible election rigging, calling such remarks dangerous and irresponsible.
“The IEBC reassures the public and all stakeholders of its independence and neutrality as it carries out its constitutional duties,” the statement read.
“We are dedicated to delivering free, fair, and credible elections in line with Kenyan law and international standards.”
This comes after Wajir Woman Representative Fatuma Abdi Jehow allegedly claimed that political figures from the North Eastern region were planning to rig the 2027 elections in favor of President William Ruto—a statement that has sparked public backlash.
While the IEBC did not mention Jehow by name, it condemned her remarks as “reckless and unacceptable” and urged citizens to disregard such claims.
The commission also emphasized that no election has been announced or gazetted for 2027, warning politicians against spreading premature and misleading information.
“There is no declared or gazetted election to justify such political propaganda,” the commission added.
In response to the increasing political tension, IEBC said it would establish the Electoral Code of Conduct Enforcement Committee as provided under Article 84 of the Constitution and Section 110 of the Elections Act. However, it clarified that the committee’s authority only applies during the official election period.
Now fully reconstituted, the IEBC said it plans to strengthen dialogue with political parties and stakeholders to rebuild trust in the electoral process ahead of the 2027 elections.
“As we head into the next election cycle, the commission remains focused on constructive engagement to uphold the integrity of the electoral process,” the IEBC noted.
It also urged the public to rely only on official IEBC communication platforms—such as its website and verified social media accounts—for credible updates.
